A Joyful Family Beach Session in Newburyport, Massachusetts

Some family sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like spending an evening with friends, and this Newburyport MA beach session was exactly that.

I had the pleasure of photographing this sweet family and their two adorable daughters on a beautiful summer evening along the coast of Newburyport, Massachusetts. From the moment we arrived, the focus wasn't on perfectly posed smiles or standing still for the camera. Instead, we embraced what makes family photography so meaningful: genuine connection, movement, and creating memories together.

The girls spent the evening searching for seashells along the shoreline, exploring the beach, and enjoying time with their parents. As we walked through the dunes and along the sand, the session unfolded naturally. The laughter, cuddles, and playful moments happened effortlessly because everyone was simply enjoying the experience together.

One of my favorite things about family photography is creating an environment where children can just be themselves. Rather than asking them to perform for the camera, I encourage families to play, explore, and interact naturally. The result is a gallery full of authentic moments that truly reflect this season of life.

We photographed this session just before true golden hour.. The sun sat low enough to add warmth and dimension to the scene while providing contrast to give the images depth. Combined with the soft beach grasses and coastal landscape, it was the perfect backdrop for timeless family portraits.

To end the evening, Mom surprised the girls with ice cream she had packed for after the session. It was such a simple but thoughtful way to celebrate the experience together and made for a perfect ending to a wonderful night at the beach.
