There’s something about a little one’s first birthday that makes a cake smash session so much fun
and this little cowboy’s first rodeo was no exception.
This sweet little guy came into my Pelham, New Hampshire home studio for his first birthday cake smash, and his family chose my First Rodeo milestone setup. The combination of rustic details, neutral tones, an adorable cowboy hat, and a custom cake add-on from a local baker made the perfect little Western-inspired setup.
And from the moment he arrived, he was very interested in what was happening.
Getting Comfortable Comes First
Before I ever pull out my camera, I like to give little ones a little time to get comfortable in the studio.
One of the first things I have Mom or Dad do is sit down with their baby right in the middle of the setup. This gives them a chance to take everything in while knowing that Mom or Dad is right there and isn't going anywhere.
Once they're feeling comfortable and curious, we can start having some fun.
We begin with a few milestone portraits before the cake makes its big entrance. These are some of my favorite images from a cake smash because we get those sweet, clean portraits before the frosting-covered chaos begins!
Then Comes the Cake
And this little guy was VERY into his cake. Like... really into it. :)
He couldn't get enough, and he actually managed to knock the cake off the stand a few times which, of course, made for some of the cutest and funniest photos of the entire session.
He took his cake smashing duties very seriously, while Mom was cracking up throughout the whole thing. And honestly, those genuine reactions are exactly what I love about cake smash sessions. They don't have to be perfectly posed or perfectly clean. Sometimes the best images are the ones where your little one is completely covered in frosting and having the time of their life.
By the end, this little cowboy had definitely earned his First Rodeo badge.
